The transfer window is now officially open, and teams are already quick off the mark getting their signings in. Teams like Everton, Man City and Liverpool have already made marquee signings, strengthening their squads. However, Chelsea are one of a number of teams that are worryingly quiet in the window so far. This is presumably down to the fact that Chelsea are waiting on their new kit sponsor (Nike) to launch o July 1st. There isn’t much point in a new player holding up a old shirt when a new one is around a week away.
So with this said, I am now going to give a list of 3 players I’m expecting Chelsea to sign and 3 players I’m expecting to leave Stamford Bridge after July 1st.
In- Romelu Lukaku
Now this isn’t really much of a shock pick. Lukaku has been linked with a move back to Chelsea for some time now, and as its looking like Diego Costa is surplus to requirements in Antonio Contes squad, that leaves space for a player like Lukaku to be brought in. The asking price is reported to be around £70million for the 24 year old and it looks as though Chelsea are happy to pay that for a player they sold just 3 years ago for £28million.The Belgian would be a good fit for Chelsea as he’s the sort of target man that Conte wants and hes certainly prolific after scoring 25 premier league goals last season.
Id say the chance of this transfer going through would be a 9/10. Or in other words, its looking likely.
In- Tiemoue Bakayoko
Another player that has been liked with Chelsea for weeks, Tiemoue Bakayoko looks like a deal that’s almost done. The Monaco holding midfielder had a fantastic season with the French side, winning the league and getting to the semi finals of the champions league. He’s a very imposing physical threat who likes to break up play and get things going back into the counter attack. In fact he lead Monaco in pass accuracy with 87.3% which shows he comfortable playing the ball. The biggest question mark over Bakayoko is that where does he fit in the team? Chelsea already have a defensive midfielder in EFL player of the year Ngolo Kante. However, if Conte was looking to change up the formation to a 352, similar to what he played at Juventus with Pirlo in front of Vidal and Pogba, allowing him to be the creative hub in the team, this would make a lot more sense . Just imagine that was Fabregas in front of Kante and Bakayoko and you’ve got a very scary looking midfield 3. Bakayoko would cost a reported £36million but the 22 year old is showing a lot of potential and could possibly dominate the midfield for years to come.
The chance of this deal going through would be 10/10. It could have already gone through by the time you’re reading this.
In- Alex Sandro
Alex Sandro is touted as one of the best full backs in the world, and would surely be an improvement on the inconsistent Marcos Alonso. The main issue with Sandro is that the asking price for the Juventus man would be around £60million, which would be a transfer record for a defender. You could however, say that the fee for Sandro would be worth it in the current transfer climate where everyone’s going for quite frankly stupid money. Sandro doesn’t have a significant weakness in his game. Hes very solid defensively but hes also very strong going forward. He registered 3 goals and 5 assists last year and he also picked up 5 MoTM awards. Juventus clearly don’t want to sell but there are rumours that they have recalled out on loan left back Leonardo Spinazzola from Atalanta, which shows they are preparing for life without the star defender at the club. Side note: Who remembers Baba Rahman?
This transfer isn’t as set in stone as the others, as there are a few critical factors. The price is obviously a big one but in the last few hours it is reported that PSG have joined the race to sign the defender, and usually what they want, they end up getting. My score for the transfer would be a 7/10
Out- Diego Costa
So who was expecting this one eh? The reported leak that Diego Costa was texted saying he was no longer wanted by Antionio Conte was the news no Chelsea fan wanted to hear. Costa was integral to Chelsea’s title win last year after scoring 20 goals and assisting a further 7. Not only are his numbers good but his aggressive play and his never say die attitude really helped cement his place as one of the most important players in the squad. A player of his quality would surely be touted to join some of the best teams in Europe, and certainly some of them have apparently come calling. One of them is AC Milan( who would prefer a loan move) and the other is his former team Athletico Madrid (his preferred destination). However, Atletico are currently serving a transfer ban so Costa would not be able to move this summer. Reports suggest he will go out on loan until January and then move to Athletico. The fee reported would be around 40million, which is a bargain for the 28 year old. That’s also a fair bit cheaper than the 90million reported bid from a Chinese side back last January. In my opinion he wont be playing at Stamford Bridge next season, so I’m going to rate this transfer at 9/10
Out- Nemanja Matic
Seeing as Bakayoko is almost nailed on to join Chelsea from Monaco this summer, it appears as though Matic will be walking out the exit. Matic had a strong season in the middle of the park for the blues, assisting 7 times in the league and also scoring one of the goals of the season against Spurs in the FA cup. He did however, have some very inconsistent spells and at times I felt that he couldn’t tackle a training dummy. Saying this, Manchester United are interested in Matic and it looks like Mourinho is eyeing up a reunion with the 28 year old. The reported fee is 40million pounds, which is a much larger fee than what I was certainly expecting at least. Matic is undoubtedly a quality player but as previously mentioned, he can be inconsistent and if United look to sell in the future, they wont be able to get much back. Also would Chelsea look to sell a player to a rival… cough* Mata. This deal looks likely as long as Bakayoko is brought in to the bridge. So I’ll give this one a 8/10
Out- Nathan Ake
A player who was never able to fully express himself at Chelsea, Ake seems like he’s out the door this summer. The 22 year old did show his quality last season out on loan at Bournemouth, but when he was recalled from his loan in January, Chelsea fans were expecting to see a bit more game time from the Netherlands youngster. Coming from the Chelsea youth academy, Fans would have liked to see him more in a Chelsea shirt. He however, has too much quality to be sitting on the bench week in, week out. Bournemouth seem to be front runners for the defender, with a 20million bid reported to be handed in. Ake leaving is not something I want to see as a Chelsea fan, but I don’t blame the youngster for wanting more game time. I’ll give this transfer a 7/10
